The challenge
MediCare Plus was running scheduling by phone and records on a legacy desktop system that clinicians could only reach from the practice. Demand for remote consultations had outgrown what an ad hoc video call arrangement could safely support.
Every technical decision was constrained by patient privacy requirements — which ruled out most of the convenient shortcuts a consumer product would take, particularly around third-party analytics and session recording.

The Approach
Four workstreams, run in the order that let each one de-risk the next.
Privacy-first architecture
Data minimisation, encryption at rest and in transit, full audit logging, and no third-party scripts anywhere near authenticated patient views.
Self-service scheduling
Real-time clinician availability with rules for appointment types and buffers, removing the phone bottleneck without disrupting clinic workflow.
Integrated telemedicine
Video consultations inside the authenticated session with waiting-room flow, so consultations never left the compliant environment.
Accessible patient interface
Designed and tested to WCAG AA with screen readers, because a meaningful share of patients have access needs the design has to meet.
The result
What Changed
Reception moved from taking bookings to handling the calls that genuinely needed a person. Seventy percent of appointments are now booked without staff involvement.
Remote consultations moved onto compliant infrastructure, which removed a risk the practice had been carrying informally and opened up capacity they could not previously offer.
